Kasbah Aghennaj – Tiznit

Kasbah Aghennaj – Tiznit

Located in the heart of Tiznit near the renowned blue spring (Ain Zarqa or Ain Aqdim), the Kasbah Aghennaj is a heritage landmark, covering an area of 6,704 square meters. It is named after Al Hahi Mohammed Aghnaj, a notable Caid who led a military campaign to the south of Oued Massa in 1810 under the orders of Sultan Moulay Slimane, establishing Tiznit as a pivotal military city to bolster Makhzen authority in the region. In 1820, Aghnaj commissioned the construction of the Kasbah at this strategic location to ensure immediate access to water.

To enhance the tourist appeal of Tiznit, the Kasbah has been transformed into an art museum featuring an exhibition hall, creative workshops, and a training center focused on the traditional crafts of Morocco. Presently, SDR Tourisme is revitalizing efforts to complete the development of the Kasbah, a project that has been stagnant for over four years. This initiative includes the establishment of its museum and the formulation of a sustainable management strategy, fostering cooperation among local stakeholders and ensuring the Kasbah’s longevity.
