Notice of Partial Opening of the Agadir Oufella Site

The Souss Massa Regional Tourism Development Company (SDR Tourisme Souss Massa) announces the partial opening of the Agadir Oufella site to the public starting mid-July 2022, following two years since the launch of the rehabilitation works. For now, visits will be limited to the exterior areas around the ramparts, as the interior of the fortress remains under construction for a few more months (completion of decking, signage, etc.). As for the restaurants, they will become operational once a manager is appointed through an ongoing Call for Expressions of Interest.

It is worth noting that the rehabilitation and redevelopment project of Agadir Oufella (Agadir-Ighir) is part of the Agadir Urban Development Program (2020–2024) and was entrusted to SDR Tourisme Souss Massa as the delegated contracting authority.

Despite the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic—notably the impact on the pace of work and the supply of imported raw materials—progress has remained aligned with the planned schedule.

The nearly completed exterior works around the Agadir Oufella ramparts include:

  • Restoration and reconstruction of walls according to precise scientific standards and pre-1960 earthquake data

  • Restoration, reinforcement, and strengthening of the Kasbah’s defensive towers

  • Construction of a platform at the Kasbah’s level to house service facilities: restaurants, a tourist information office, security services, restrooms, etc.

  • Development of a lower-level platform for visitor reception and orientation

  • Rehabilitation of pedestrian pathways leading to Agadir Oufella

  • Lighting of the East and South walls and the main entrance

  • Installation of exterior informational and directional signage

  • Landscaping of surrounding areas with argan trees and companion plant species

Meanwhile, work continues on:

  • Installation of a wooden walkway (already over 85% complete), allowing visitors to explore the Kasbah’s interior following the original pre-earthquake path

  • Finalizing lighting across the entire fortress

  • Installing interior signage

  • Completing plantation work
