Meeting of the Board of Directors of SDR Tourisme Souss Massa

The Tourism Development Company “SDR Tourisme Souss Massa” held its 2023 Board of Directors meeting at the headquarters of the Wilaya of the Souss Massa Region on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Saaïd AMZAZI, Wali of the Region and Chairman of the Board, in the presence of board members including the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, the President of the Souss Massa Regional Council, the First Vice-President of the Agadir Municipality, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services, the President of the Chamber of Handicrafts, as well as the Director General of SDR Tourisme Souss Massa.

In his opening speech, Mr. Saaïd AMZAZI highlighted the currently very favorable international and national context, with highly encouraging prospects for tourism. He referenced the very satisfactory performance of regional tourism in 2023, particularly regarding arrivals at Agadir Al Massira Airport and in classified tourist accommodation facilities.

Regarding the regional implementation of the strategic roadmap for the tourism sector (2023-2030), the Wali indicated that the regional action plan is being finalized and is primarily based on tourism projects included in the Regional Development Plan (PDR).

Mr. Wali then highlighted the main actions undertaken by SDR Tourisme Souss Massa during 2023:

  • Concerning the Agadir Urban Development Plan (PDU) projects, 2023 was marked by the public opening of the Agadir Oufella site on February 3, 2024. The development and equipping works of the tourist information center and the administrative complex at the beach have been completed, and the offices of the administrative complex have been delivered to the relevant authorities.

  • For the two renovation and upgrade programs for tourist accommodation facilities, covering hotels in Agadir and lodgings in the region’s hinterland, the allocated budgets have been committed. It was proposed to renew these two mechanisms by extending the hotel renovation program to the entire Souss Massa region, enabling hotels in the region to benefit from this support.

  • Regarding rural and nature tourism development, SDR Tourisme continued the ongoing tourism development works and launched new developments at various sites with tourism potential in the region, notably the site adjacent to Imourane Beach in Aourir, the Menara of Ait Jerrar in Tiznit, the two forest parks of Ait Baha in the commune of Ait Baha, and Ahl Souss in the commune of Ait Mzal. Other areas are currently in architectural study phases to finalize the appropriate concept for each territory.

  • Concerning tourism investment units, development works continued in 2023 in the Anchor Point area. For Imsouane, the agreement has been approved and the first tender launched. This tourism development unit dedicated to investment will host accommodation projects, tourist activities, and sports and cultural facilities, covering an area of 20 hectares, of which 11.4 hectares are dedicated to investment.

  • SDR Tourisme made significant progress in the development of the Taghazout corniche, especially in upgrading the lower village area. The contract for the construction of the fish market, fishermen’s shops, and administrative offices has been awarded, and work will begin shortly.

  • As part of the enhancement of the “La Médina d’Agadir” complex, a new temporary occupation permit for the forest domain was recently signed for a period of 15 years starting January 1, 2024, and a management strategy is currently being developed.

  • Tourism promotion was also a focus for SDRT during the past year. The network of tourist information kiosks in the Souss Massa region has expanded: two kiosks in Taroudannt and Tafraout were handed over to local tourist associations, which will manage and disseminate tourist information in their areas. Additionally, two more kiosks are planned for Tiznit and Tata in 2024. Furthermore, SDR Tourisme continues its promotional efforts to enhance the visibility of the Agadir Souss Massa destination digitally via the Explore-Agadir Souss Massa portal.

  • Finally, 120 articles from the new collection of regional handicraft designs have been produced by three designers in collaboration with artisans from the Souss Massa region.

The Board of Directors then reviewed the agenda items, approving the physical and financial reports for 2023, the action plan and budget for 2024, as well as the annual accounts for the 2023 fiscal year. The Board also finalized the summary statements for 2023, set the draft resolutions to be submitted at the next Ordinary General Assembly scheduled before June 2024, and unanimously approved all resolutions listed on the agenda.
